Summary

"Laws" by Plato is a thought-provoking discussion among three men of different Greek origins, delving into their systems of law and what those laws hope to achieve for the people. Taking place during a walk, they discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each other's codes of law. One man, from Athens, argues that laws should aim for virtues beyond just military strength, a common theme of the laws from the other two men's home city-states, Crete and Sparta. Through thoughtful dialogue, they seek to define courage and justice to guide their understanding of what makes a good society, as it is directly connected with what a law should be.

About the Author

Plato, born Aristocles, was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
