Summary

"Sophist" by Plato is a philosophical discussion from ancient Greece that grapples with tough questions about what is real, what isn't, and the difference between real wisdom and tricky arguments. The main character, a visitor from Elea, guides a conversation with others, including Socrates, to understand the nature of a sophist. The story begins with characters gathering and quickly moves into a careful examination, comparing sophists to fishermen as a way to understand their deceptive methods. These sophists are shown as manipulators who use language to trick people, leading to bigger conversations about knowledge and lies and setting the stage to determine what is true.

About the Author

Plato, born Aristocles, was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
