Summary

"Euthyphro" by Plato is a philosophical conversation set in ancient Greece where Socrates, awaiting trial for not being religious, meets Euthyphro, who is charging his father with murder. The story looks closely at what it means to be religiously correct and morally good by following Socrates as he questions Euthyphro about what piety really is. As Euthyphro tries to define piety, Socrates finds problems with his ideas, showing that even the gods might not agree on what is right or wrong. The back-and-forth between the two characters shows how hard it is to pin down solid definitions for morality, and it underscores the complicated connections between following religious rules and using moral reasoning to decide what's right.

About the Author

Plato, born Aristocles, was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
