Summary

"Timaeus" by Plato is a philosophical discussion from ancient Greece that investigates the origins of the universe and humanity’s place within it. The dialogue features characters discussing the perfect society before transitioning to Timaeus's explanation of how the world was made and what it's made of, including the basic elements and the influence of a godlike figure. Sprinkled throughout are old stories, like the story of Atlantis, which gives the philosophical ideas a sense of history and makes them more relatable. Plato combines science and spirituality, suggesting that to understand the universe, we need both logical thinking and an awareness of the divine plan.

About the Author

Plato, born Aristocles, was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
