Summary

"Lysis" by Plato is a Socratic conversation from ancient Greece that explores the meaning of friendship. Socrates guides two young boys, Lysis and Menexenus, through a series of questions about love and what it means to be true friends. They consider whether friendship comes from being alike, being useful to each other, or something more profound. The discussion looks at the role of wisdom and knowledge in being loved, and whether love is only between people who feel the same way about each other. The dialogue touches on good and evil, desire, and the search for knowledge, suggesting that friendship might grow from wanting what is good and knowing, even though the characters can't find solid answers by the end. This book asks the audience to think hard about the complicated nature of being in relationships and connecting with others.

About the Author

Plato, born Aristocles, was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
