Summary

"Phaedrus" by Plato is a deep discussion documented as a philosophical dialogue. The dialogue unpacks the connection between love and effective speaking through a conversation between Socrates and Phaedrus. It starts with Phaedrus sharing a speech from Lysias, who argues that someone who isn't in love might be better than someone who is. Socrates isn't so sure about the value of this kind of speaking, and this starts a big conversation about what love really is, how to speak well, and the difference between knowing something and just having an opinion about it. This leads to a bigger look at what's behind strong feelings and how we share them with each other.

About the Author

Plato, born Aristocles, was an ancient Greek philosopher of the Classical period who is considered a foundational thinker in Western philosophy and an innovator of the written dialogue and dialectic forms. He raised problems for what became all the major areas of both theoretical philosophy and practical philosophy, and was the founder of the Platonic Academy, a philosophical school in Athens where Plato taught the doctrines that would later become known as Platonism.
