Summary

"The Custom of the Country" by Edith Wharton is a story about Undine Spragg, a young woman from a small town, trying to climb the social ladder in New York City's high society. Undine and her mother, Mrs. Spragg, are introduced living a disconnected wealthy existance in a fancy hotel in New York and Undine is not happy. She wants to be accepted by the ‘it’ crowd and when Mrs. Fairford invites Undine to dinner she is beyond excited because her big opportunity has arrived. Themes of ambition, materialism, and identity are explored as Undine tries to find her place in a confusing and disheartening world.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
