Summary

"The Age of Innocence" by Edith Wharton is a story that paints a vivid picture of New York's high society in the late 1800s, where keeping up appearances is everything. It follows Newland Archer, a young lawyer all set to marry the sweet May Welland. However, things get complicated when May's cousin, Countess Ellen Olenska, shows up, causing a stir with her scandalous reputation. Right from the start, at a fancy opera night, Archer finds himself torn. He's supposed to marry May, but he's drawn to the Countess, who represents everything that his predictable world isn't. He will have to find a way to balance his own wants and the strict rules of his social circle, which is no easy task.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
