Summary

"The Spark (The 'Sixties)" by Edith Wharton is a story that follows Hayley Delane, a calm banker in the upper class, as observed by a young admirer. The novel looks at identity, the pressure of society, and how the past affects the present, all set in New York's high society. As problems come up between Delane, his wife Leila, and his father-in-law, Bill Gracy, the story shows the hidden vulnerability and challenges of being real, as Delane's true emotions come to the surface. In the end, "The Spark" shares a sad message about how complicated relationships can be and the need to find purpose in a changing world.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
