Summary

"The Reef" by Edith Wharton is a story set in the late 1800s that looks at tricky ideas such as love and the rules of society; it tells the story of George Darrow and Anna Leath and their messy history. George's emotions get stirred up when he gets a telegram from Anna, making him think back to their past and the things keeping them apart. As he deals with a terrible storm, his feelings are all over the place because of Anna and his connection with Sophy Viner. Sophy is young and spirited, and brings a new twist to George's feelings for Anna, making him wonder whether it is better to look to the past or explore new romances.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
