Summary

"Crucial Instances" by Edith Wharton, is a set of short stories that examines love and despair within high society during the late 1800s. In the beginning story, readers meet Duchess Violante and consider her life through art and grief. The scene opens in an old Italian villa, where a narrator meets an old guide and views rooms of the Duchess. The mysteries heighten as they discover a statue of the Duchess that is horrifying. The guide shares pieces of her story, describing the Duchess's vibrant personality, her seclusion, and her descent into sadness, reflecting the statue's chilling change. The tone creates a sense of mystery, which prepares readers for Wharton's examination of themes relating to the human mind.
