"The Early Short Fiction of Edith Wharton — Part 1" by Edith Wharton is a compilation of short stories from the turn of the century, exploring complicated feelings, social connections, and the lasting power of memories and sadness, as seen in stories like "Kerfol" and "Mrs. Manstey's View," and shows Wharton's deep understanding of the lives of wealthy Americans; the collection starts with "Kerfol," where a narrator visits Kerfol, an estate full of mystery and possible ghost stories, inspired by a friend, and while exploring, he is struck by the quiet beauty and meets dogs that appear to guard the land; this creates themes of longing and past events, questioning life after sorrow.
