Summary

"The Early Short Fiction of Edith Wharton — Part 2" by Edith Wharton is a compilation of short stories and poems from the turn of the century, showcasing captivating narratives ranging from eerie ghost stories, such as a tale about hidden secrets in an old English home in "Afterward," to insightful examinations of life and love. Wharton explores the weight of memory, and the intricate nature of human feelings. “Afterward” sets the tone, introducing Mary and Edward Boyne who are starting a new life in the countryside. Mary is excited but recalls talk of a ghost in the house, shrouded in mystery. The story shows a building sense of unease as secrets and unacknowledged battles put a strain on their bond. She uses vivid descriptions of both English and American settings to set the stage for thought-provoking accounts masterfully woven together throughout the collection.

About the Author

Edith Newbold Wharton was an American writer and designer. Wharton drew upon her insider's knowledge of the upper-class New York "aristocracy" to portray, realistically, the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. In 1921, she became the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction, for her novel, The Age of Innocence. She was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame, in 1996. Her other well-known works are The House of Mirth, the novella Ethan Frome, and several notable ghost stories.
