Summary

"Cursed by a Fortune" by George Manville Fenn is a story from the late 1800s. It follows Robert Wilton, a rich banker, as he nears his end and makes plans for his daughter, Kitty, and tasks his brother, Will, with ensuring her well-being. The story is about love, responsibility, the challenges that come with money, and how Kitty's life gets mixed up with what other people want for her. It introduces Robert Wilton saying goodbye to his family, especially Kitty, who is very sad about him passing away. Robert makes his brother Will the person in charge of his will, so Kitty will get a lot of money, but tells him to watch out for anyone trying to take advantage of her. After this sad scene, the reader meets characters like Claud, and how he and others try to control Kitty’s future for their own purposes as they deal with their desires and goals in a world of money and uncertain social positions.
