Summary

"The Golden Magnet" by George Manville Fenn is a late 1800's adventure story about growing up. It follows Harry, a teen who is tired of his family's soap business, and wants to find his wealth and explore new places. Harry isn't alone! Tom, who is reliable and works hard, joins him. Tom becomes Harry's friend and helps him along his adventure. At the start, the book shows South America, like the city of gold with treasure and danger. This makes Harry want to leave his old life behind in favor of glory. When Harry says he's going, Tom wants to go with him. They have funny conversations together that show how good of friends they are, as they begin their long trip to Harry's Uncle Reuben in South America. The novel hints at the adventures and troubles they will face, including a powerful and scary earthquake right when they get there.
