Summary

"Will of the Mill" by George Manville Fenn is a story that occurs in the Derbyshire dales, where a group of Huguenots settled. The book tells of Will and Josh, the sons of a mill owner and a vicar, respectively, who develop a friendship that goes hand in hand with that of a visiting artist. As a unit they go on adventures that they come across as the challenges of life come their way, such as a fire at the mill and the threat of flooding. At the start of the novel, we learn of the close friendship between Will and Josh and about the setting of Belle Dale,. The pair partakes in playful games, such as hoisting the umbrella of a sleeping artist. During the story, however, tensions rise as incidents occur at the mill, as well as, we meet James Drinkwater, who becomes obsessed with the mill owner. The first parts of the book build the scene for youthful antics, disagreements, and a display of loyalty and the fight against troubles.

About the Author

George Manville Fenn was a prolific English novelist, journalist, editor and educationalist. Many of his novels were written with young adults in mind. His final book was his biography of a fellow writer for juveniles, George Alfred Henty.
