Summary

"Oh, Money! Money!" by Eleanor H. Porter is a story from the beginning of the 1900s that centers on Stanley G. Fulton, a rich man who worries about what his huge fortune means. He’s concerned about what will happen to his money when he dies, so he decides to pretend to be someone else named John Smith to watch his relatives deal with getting a lot of money all of a sudden. At the start, Fulton is talking to his lawyer, wondering what will happen to his money and not really trusting big charities because he thinks they aren't truly caring. After seeing a young man waste his inheritance, Fulton comes up with a plan to secretly give his three cousins a lot of money to see what they’re really like and if they can handle being rich. The story cleverly begins to explore ideas about money, right and wrong, and family, while introducing interesting relatives like Flora, a simple dressmaker, and James Blaisdell, a grocery store owner having a hard time. Fulton's adventure shows not only what he believes in but also how people act when they have money and responsibility.
