Summary

"Avarice--Anger: Two of the Seven Cardinal Sins" by Eugène Sue is a story set in 19th-century Paris that shows us the life of Mariette, a young woman who faces tough times while caring for her sick godmother, Madame Lacombe. It's a story about love, doing what's right, and fighting against unfairness in society, especially through the bond Mariette has with her lover, Louis. We see Mariette's kindness and hard work as she puts her godmother's needs first. As Mariette writes a letter to Louis, we catch a sense of the troubles they might face later on. A man helping her write notices something about her relationship with Louis that makes him worry. The story hints at struggles with love, money, and doing the right thing.
