Summary

"The Seven Cardinal Sins: Envy and Indolence" by Eugène Sue is a story set in 19th-century France that explores strong emotions and differences in the social classes of the time through Frederick Bastien and his mother, Madame Bastien. The story starts in 1828, showing how the mother and son made a rundown farmhouse into a nice home, suggesting a hopeful future. Sixteen-year-old Frederick is very close to Madame Bastien, who has lovingly improved their lives and looks forward to bringing up her son. However, this peaceful life is interrupted when Frederick begins to feel jealous because he sees the grand Château de Pont Brillant and the wealthy Marquis who lives there. This envy highlights the deep emotional problems he faces as he struggles with feeling less important due to his simple beginnings compared to the rich upper class. It sets the stage for how these feelings will impact his relationships and how he sees himself.
