Summary

"The Executioner's Knife; Or, Joan of Arc" by Eugène Sue is a historical fiction novel that places a young girl named Jeannette at center stage as she navigates life in Domremy amidst looming war. Set against the backdrop of the English occupation of France, the story navigates dark and serious themes of social injustice and class oppression. Jeannette emerges as wise beyond her years, her childhood days filled with stories and folklore transforming into a stirring destiny, touched by both the mystical whispers within her village and the stark realities of war. As she grapples with her feelings and observes the cruelties around her, destiny prepares her to become the legendary Joan of Arc, a warrior poised to defy patriarchal limits and fight for her homeland's freedom.
