Summary

"Antonia" by George Sand is a story that takes place in Paris in 1785 and tells of Julien Thierry, a youthful flower painter, and his mother, Madame Thierry, as they cope with the loss of Julien's father. The book discusses love, where people belong in society, what people want to achieve through art, and how Julien starts to fall for the Comtesse d'Estrelle, a widow. The story begins with Julien working in his studio, painting and talking with his mother, showing they have a strong connection as they remember Julien's father and talk about love. At the same time, the Comtesse is worried about money and what people expect from her as she thinks about her past and how lonely she is. The story then shows how Julien's feelings for the Comtesse grow, which links their lives together while dealing with social class and money problems.
