Summary

"The Carlovingian Coins; Or, The Daughters of Charlemagne" by Eugène Sue is a historical adventure unfolding in the ninth century. It's part of a bigger collection that tells the story of a working-class family over time, this story places us during the reign of Charlemagne, following Vortigern, a young hostage from Brittany, and his grandpa Amael as they try to find their way in Charlemagne's kingdom and deal with the problems in their homeland. We meet them heading to Aix-la-Chapelle, worried about their family back home, and the story shows Vortigern struggling with being a hostage in enemy territory. His friendship with Octave shows the tough issues of loyalty and identity between the Bretons and the Franks. As the story moves forward, we see the world of the royal court, learn about each character, and watch Vortigern fall for Thetralde, the Emperor's daughter, setting the scene for themes of conquest, who we are, and love during Charlemagne's rule.
