Summary

"The Wheat Princess" by Jean Webster is a story set in the early 1900s about an American family's summer in Italy, exploring themes of wealth and the responsibilities that come with it. The book tells of Marcia Copley, called "the Wheat Princess" for her father's wealth, as she and her family find themselves living at Castel Vivalanti. After Marcia and her aunt arrive at a tea party, we learn about the social perceptions of her and her family and how they fit in with the wealthy Italians, hinting at the complexities of fitting in as Marcia gets used to her new surroundings.

About the Author

Jean Webster was the pen name of Alice Jane Chandler Webster, an American author whose books include Daddy-Long-Legs and Dear Enemy. Her best-known books feature lively and likeable young female protagonists who come of age intellectually, morally, and socially, but with enough humor, snappy dialogue, and gently biting social commentary to make her books palatable and enjoyable to contemporary readers.
