Summary

"Only an Irish Boy; Or, Andy Burke's Fortunes" by Horatio Alger Jr. is a late 19th-century story about a young Irish immigrant named Andy Burke who faces hardships tied to being poor while trying to better himself and help his family. Dealing with richer kids like the stuck-up Godfrey Preston shows how tough Andy is, and how much he values working hard, being honest, and having good friends. Early in the story, Andy gets into a fight with Godfrey, a colonel's son who looks down on him for being Irish and poor; the clash shows the problems of unfair social classes and that Andy is brave, clever, and ready to defend himself and those around him.
