"Cast Upon the Breakers" by Horatio Alger, Jr. is a story from long ago about a young man named Rodney Ropes, whose comfortable life is turned upside down when he loses all his family's money because his guardian was dishonest. Suddenly poor, Rodney has to leave his school and figure out how to survive in New York City. He misses his old life but refuses to sell his mother's jewelry, even though he needs money.
