Summary

"Jimmy Kirkland of the Cascade College Team" by Hugh S. Fullerton is an early 20th-century tale centered on James "Larry" Kirkland, a freshman at Cascade College, as he faces feelings of being unimportant, competition, and working to be great at baseball. Set against the backdrop of student friendships, the story explores growing up and never giving up. Larry starts feeling both excited and alone as he joins Cascade College, watching other students happily reunite. He tries to fit in but feels out of place. Larry's athletic skills and dreams are clear from the start, but he clashes with a rival, Harry Baldwin, putting his place at risk. This beginning sets the scene for Larry's quest to find himself and redeem himself in the tough and sometimes unwelcoming world of college sports.
