Summary

"Masterman and Son" by W. J. Dawson is a story set in the early 1900s, telling of Archibold Masterman, a man who worked his way up from nothing to become a well-known, rich person in London. The book looks at big ideas like wanting more in life, different levels of society, right and wrong, and how complicated families can be, mostly by watching Archibold and his son, Arthur. Archibold starts as a builder who makes himself respected and important through taking chances in business and promoting himself. He's a complicated person because he's ambitious but also not always honest. He has trouble at home because Arthur comes back from Oxford with new ideas about what's right and wrong. This causes problems for the Masterman family as they deal with being honest, wanting more, and fighting between generations, all mixed in with what they hope for and what makes them unhappy.
