Summary

"Oxford" by Edward Thomas is a journey through a city celebrated for its history and beauty. The story introduces Oxford as a place filled with old stories, wonderful scenery, and a lively community of teachers and students, blending historical facts with the author's own experiences and thoughts about the city's architecture and academic background. The beginning shows a personal trip to Oxford, as the author goes through pretty areas and the quiet noises of the old buildings. From rainy days to important churches, towers, and college buildings, his feelings change between missing the past and admiring the city's famous history. Thomas captures the heart of Oxford, showing great respect for its lasting beauty and the mix of the present day with echoes of its busy past, making the beginning thoughtful and setting the tone for the rest of the book.

About the Author

Philip Edward Thomas was a British writer of poetry and prose. He is sometimes considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. He only started writing poetry at the age of 36, but by that time he had already been a prolific critic, biographer, nature writer and travel writer for two decades. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France.
