Summary

"In Pursuit of Spring" by Edward Thomas is a travel story from the early 1900s about a bike trip from London to the Quantock Hills in Somerset, where the author looks at the world around him. The story is about how the seasons change and how people connect with nature; the reader accompanies the author on his journey and shown his thoughts as he gets ready to leave. He thinks about the weather and plans his trip because he wants to see Spring arrive. He uses beautiful descriptions to show how lively nature is in London and how excited he is to see the countryside bloom. As he travels, he tells about the things he sees and hears, showing how different the peaceful natural world is from the busy city. This beginning sets the stage for a story about places, but also about things like new beginnings, nature, and thinking about yourself.

About the Author

Philip Edward Thomas was a British writer of poetry and prose. He is sometimes considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. He only started writing poetry at the age of 36, but by that time he had already been a prolific critic, biographer, nature writer and travel writer for two decades. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France.
