Summary

"The Heart of England" by Edward Thomas is a reflective journey through the English countryside, marked by keen observations of nature and rural life. The story paints vivid pictures of serene landscapes and seasonal shifts, contrasting them with the complexities of human emotions. Initially, a boy's fascination with a free-spirited watercress seller introduces themes of adventure and longing. This sets the stage for the author's reflections on life, viewed from a moving train amidst the sprawling cityscape, highlighting the blend of beauty and routine in both natural and urban settings as people navigate their yearning for something more.

About the Author

Philip Edward Thomas was a British writer of poetry and prose. He is sometimes considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. He only started writing poetry at the age of 36, but by that time he had already been a prolific critic, biographer, nature writer and travel writer for two decades. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France.
