Summary

"The South Country" by Edward Thomas is a travel journal where the author recounts a year exploring England's southern counties, like Kent and Sussex. He describes the beautiful scenery and his strong connection to nature using detailed and poetic language. The book opens with a vivid picture of the South Country, showing its importance compared to other areas of England. Thomas prefers quiet, empty paths away from towns, so he can be surrounded by nature. He thinks about the different landscapes, rivers, and plants of the countryside, and expresses a desire to be alone and close to the land. This beginning sets the stage for a thoughtful journey through places and emotions as he travels through the South Country.

About the Author

Philip Edward Thomas was a British writer of poetry and prose. He is sometimes considered a war poet, although few of his poems deal directly with his war experiences. He only started writing poetry at the age of 36, but by that time he had already been a prolific critic, biographer, nature writer and travel writer for two decades. In 1915, he enlisted in the British Army to fight in the First World War and was killed in action during the Battle of Arras in 1917, soon after he arrived in France.
