The Three Fates

"The Three Fates" by F. Marion Crawford is a tale from the late 1800s about a young man named George Wood, who is trying to figure out who he is and what he wants in life. His dad's past failures weigh heavily on him, and he doesn't want to follow the path his father expects. George dreams of being a writer, but his family wants him to do something more traditional. The story looks at how family and society can pressure someone, and what it means to find your own way. We meet George's dad, Jonah, who is unhappy that his son isn't interested in business. George can't stand the idea of working in finance because of what happened to his family. He throws himself into writing, even though he feels lost. When George meets two orphaned sisters, Constance and Grace Fearing, he feels both interested and uneasy, which shows how confused he is about his future and the expectations placed upon him.
