Summary

"Wit Without Money" by John Fletcher is a comedic play set in the English Renaissance, exploring themes of wealth, folly, and love. The story centers on Valentine, a witty but irresponsible gentleman who has wasted his inheritance and stubbornly avoids financial responsibility. The opening scene reveals Valentine’s lifestyle through the worries of his uncle and a merchant. He is shown to scorn typical social and financial responsibilities. The play contrasts Valentine’s carefree philosophy with the serious concerns of those around him, creating humorous situations as he navigates relationships and expectations.

About the Author

John Fletcher was an English playwright. Following William Shakespeare as house playwright for the King's Men, he was among the most prolific and influential dramatists of his day; during his lifetime and in the Stuart Restoration, his fame rivalled Shakespeare's. Fletcher collaborated in writing plays, chiefly with Francis Beaumont or Philip Massinger, but also with Shakespeare and others.
