Summary

"Love for Love: A Comedy" by William Congreve is a late 17th-century play exploring love, financial recklessness, and societal expectations through the story of Valentine, a young man deeply in debt, and his pursuit of Angelica, a rich woman whose love he seeks amidst his ruin. We meet Valentine as he faces his dad's disapproval over his spending habits, while, comically, he hopes his financial woes will attract Angelica; his friend Jeremy's humor serves as a warning against using poetry to win her heart. The play weaves together the humorous interactions of characters like Tattle and Foresight, offering social commentary as they navigate relationships within the confines of society, creating a lively comedic world and framing the unfolding drama.
