Summary

"The Custom of the Country" by John Fletcher is a dramatic play set in the early 1600s, exploring the intense conflicts between genuine love, personal honor, and the brutal marital customs of the time. The play centers on the plight of Arnoldo, who is betrothed to Zenocia but is tormented by the impending barbaric tradition that grants the governor the right to deflower her before their marriage. The heartfelt anguish of Arnoldo, along with the introduction of Zenocia and the villainous Count Clodio—who strives to abuse the custom for his own desires—establishes a world of forced marriages, barbaric traditions, and characters wrestling between their societal duties and personal desires. This sets up a tense narrative of romantic obstacles, ethical battles, and brave resistance toward an oppressive culture.

About the Author

John Fletcher was an English playwright. Following William Shakespeare as house playwright for the King's Men, he was among the most prolific and influential dramatists of his day; during his lifetime and in the Stuart Restoration, his fame rivalled Shakespeare's. Fletcher collaborated in writing plays, chiefly with Francis Beaumont or Philip Massinger, but also with Shakespeare and others.
