Summary

"The Humourous Lieutenant" by John Fletcher is a tragicomedy set in Greece, where love, honor, and the foolishness of war collide amidst royal ambitions and romantic entanglements. The story centers on King Antigonus, his son Demetrius, and Celia, the woman desired by Demetrius, as their relationships and aspirations are tested. The play starts in a lively court, full of anticipation for visiting ambassadors, highlighting Demetrius's love for Celia against his aging father's youthful longings. Celia's sharp wit and independent nature are displayed in interactions, creating tension, while the arrival of the ambassadors brings a serious declaration of war.

About the Author

John Fletcher was an English playwright. Following William Shakespeare as house playwright for the King's Men, he was among the most prolific and influential dramatists of his day; during his lifetime and in the Stuart Restoration, his fame rivalled Shakespeare's. Fletcher collaborated in writing plays, chiefly with Francis Beaumont or Philip Massinger, but also with Shakespeare and others.
