"The Crucifixion of Philip Strong" by Charles M. Sheldon is a story set in the late 1800's, where a preacher by the name of Phillip Strong is trying to decide where he should minister. Eventually, he decides to take a job in Milton, a factory town, where he comes face to face with questions about right and wrong, doing what is best for others, and how much one should sacrifice for their beliefs, specifically justice for those people in tough situations. He wants to help the working-class people but doing so brings him into conflict when the church members push back after he confronts some societal norms like gambling. The beginning of the story shows the moral problems Philip starts to grapple with and how much trouble he causes when going up against the people in power.
