Summary

"The Redemption of Freetown" by Charles M. Sheldon is a story that happens in Merton, a made-up town, during a time of crime and racial struggles, especially in a run-down area called Freetown. The book is about making things right, doing what you're supposed to do, and how people working together can fix problems in their community. It starts with Judge Vernon sending a young African American man, Burke Williams, to jail because of a crime linked to the chaos of Freetown, a place full of lawlessness and bad behavior. As the story moves forward, important people like the judge's family and Howard Douglass, the local minister, find themselves mixed up in what's happening in Freetown. After something terrible happens to the judge's son, the characters decide to join forces to rescue Freetown, leading to the start of a community center designed to help the people living there. The novel shines a light on how strong love and dedication can be as the community gathers to solve major problems, showing that real change comes from what people do on their own and together.

About the Author

Charles Monroe Sheldon was an American Congregationalist minister and a leader of the Social Gospel movement. His 1896 novel In His Steps introduced the principle "What would Jesus do?", which articulated an approach to Christian theology that became popular at the turn of the 20th century and enjoyed a revival almost one hundred years later. The stretch of US-24 on the north side of Topeka, Kansas, between US-75 and K-4 is named the "Charles Sheldon Trafficway" in his honor.
