Summary

"The Pilot and His Wife" by Jonas Lie is a story that takes place on Norway's southern coast and tells about Elizabeth and her grandfather, Old Jacob. After Old Jacob passes away, Elizabeth is left to make her way through the world of love and expectation. The story begins by showing where they live near Little Torungen. Old Jacob lives in a lighthouse with Elizabeth. Jacob is very serious because bad things that happened in the past. While Elizabeth is ready to learn new things about the world. They enjoy watching ships and people go by. This gives an idea of Elizabeth's relationships she will have in the future with sailors as she grows up and deals with love, like with Salvé, who is a sailor, and Carl Beck, who is a naval officer.

About the Author

Jonas Lauritz Idemil Lie was a Norwegian novelist, poet, and playwright who, together with Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Alexander Kielland, is considered to have been one of the Four Greats of 19th century Norwegian literature.
