Summary

"Northern Lights" by Gilbert Parker is a story set in the old Far West, first before railroads came and then later when the Royal Northwest Mounted Police showed up. It’s about Mitiahwe, a young Blackfoot woman, and Dingan, a white man, and their love for each other, even though they come from different cultures. The story begins with Mitiahwe and her mom, Swift Wing, in their home. They don't agree on everything, especially because Mitiahwe is excited about a possible future with Dingan, but Swift Wing worries about what's to come. Then, Breaking Rock, someone else who wants Mitiahwe for himself, shows up with bad news: Dingan might leave. This beginning really grabs your attention as it explores important ideas like staying true to yourself, how powerful love can be, and what happens when different ways of life meet.
