Summary

"Elsket and Other Stories" by Thomas Nelson Page is a set of late 1800s short stories about love, loyalty, and tough times in a harsh but beautiful place, told through a visitor's eyes as he meets Olaf and his daughter, Elsket, in a remote Norse village after being encouraged to take a fishing trip to Norway by his pal, Dr. John Robson. The narrator deals with being alone as he waits for Olaf, hearing scary warnings about the "Devil's Seat" mountain pass and seeing how much Olaf wants to protect Elsket, which kicks off a deeper exploration of family ties, old traditions, and the powerful beauty of the natural world: the narrator finds himself stuck between old stories and his growing feelings for Elsket, mixing his own story with the cultural backgrounds of the characters.
