Summary

The Ambassadors by Henry James is a story that follows Lambert Strether as he arrives in Europe, specifically beginning in Chester, England, as he seeks to rekindle a friendship and enjoy a moment of peace. However, his time is swiftly complicated by the unexpected appearance of Maria Gostrey, an acquaintance from his past. This encounter creates a dynamic within Strether, torn between the allure of new social interactions and some apprehension. As the narrative unfolds, Strether reflects on his life, juxtaposing his current freedom in Europe with his past in Woollett, Massachusetts, and he starts to grapple with complex emotions. The overarching theme is the exploration of life's missed opportunities, forcing Strether to reconsider his choices as he navigates Europe.
