Summary

"The Boss of Taroomba" by E. W. Hornung is a story set in the Australian bush during the late 1800s, centering around a music shop managed by Engelhardt, a gentle musician. This musician must balance his artistic passions with the harsh realities of the crude environment around him. As Engelhardt performs for a group of rowdy young men in the town of Taroomba, his music is initially mocked. However, the unexpected arrival of Naomi Pryse, the strong-willed female leader of Taroomba, brings a shift in the scene as she displays kindness towards Engelhardt. Their developing friendship becomes increasingly important, suggesting themes of acceptance and personal growth are explored amid the backdrop of a society grappling with ambition and class differences.

About the Author

Ernest William Hornung was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.
