Summary

"A Bride from the Bush" by E. W. Hornung is a story set in the late 1800s that looks at what happens when Alfred Bligh brings his new wife, Gladys, from the Australian outback back to meet his family in England. The story looks at the comedic and heartfelt moments that arise when the family discovers Gladys isn’t quite what they expected with her unconventional manners and a vibrant, outspoken personality that contrast what they consider socially acceptable. As Alfred's mother, Lady Bligh, attempts to maintain a positive outlook on her new daughter-in-law, his brother, Granville, is more critical. The story opens by showcasing a family breakfast interrupted by Alfred’s letter that introduces the premise for the interesting and tense cultural collision about to occur.

About the Author

Ernest William Hornung was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.
