Summary

"The Thousandth Woman" by E. W. Hornung is a gripping mystery from the early 1900s that centers around Cazalet's return to England from Australia and his entanglement in the murder investigation of Henry Craven. The story starts with Cazalet on a ship where his dreams are haunted by Craven's death. He meets Hilton Toye, an American who knows of his history with Craven. Cazalet's family harbors deep resentment towards the slain man due to past financial hardships. As the narrative gains momentum, the news of Craven’s violent death unfolds and pulls Cazalet into a complex web of revenge, family secrets, and questions of identity. With the suspect of Scruton, who was just released from prison, the story’s exciting plot builds with Cazalet's past emotions and creates a suspenseful plot that will keep you turning the pages.

About the Author

Ernest William Hornung was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.
