Summary

"Mr. Justice Raffles" by E.W. Hornung is a captivating tale set in the early 1900s, featuring the charismatic and ethically questionable A.J. Raffles, a celebrated cricket player deeply involved in a realm of criminal activity. Raffles' story unfolds alongside his devoted friend, Bunny Manders, who is pulled into Raffles’ intricate plots, often against his own conscience. The beginning of the novel shows a mystery surrounding Raffles' sudden absence, disclosed to Bunny via a telegram from Carlsbad, where Raffles has been recovering. After they meet again in London, Raffles reveals his pursuit to find a missing emerald necklace, which he feels is rightfully Bunny's. Through witty conversations, Raffles' daring allure and Bunny's internal battle with right and wrong are showcased, preparing readers for a narrative that questions allegiance, attraction to dishonesty, and rightfulness. The characters' relationships and Raffles' bold and skillful attitude are quickly made apparent in the initial chapters, luring readers into a thrilling world of suspense and risky escapades.
