Summary

"The Light Princess and Other Fairy Stories" by George MacDonald is a compilation of magical stories from the 1800s, that starts by telling of a royal couple’s wish for a child and the arrival of a princess burdened by a curse from her mean aunt, Princess Makemnoit. This makes her unable to feel gravity. The collection looks at what it means to be light and serious, considers fate versus choice, and the battles of love. The story begins when a princess is found to float since her aunt’s magic has taken away her gravity. The king and queen, her parents, are shocked when they see their daughter going against all the rules of science, which causes both funny and scary results. Growing up, the princess is charmingly thoughtless, she brings laughter and trouble to the royal home. Her strange situation shows the beauty of a kid's carefree outlook, as well as the dangers of her parents and the court not understanding or caring for her.
