Summary

"What's Mine's Mine — Complete" by George MacDonald is a novel set in the late 1800s that introduces the prosperous Palmer family whose lives seem comfortable, but the story hints at deeper desires and questions about their identities. The novel starts in the family's elegant dining room and quickly shines a light on the differing views of the two daughters, Christina and Mercy, as they converse about their lives. The girls are restless, dreaming about a more romantic past connected to land and nobility. This leads them to think about difficult topics like who they want to be, their place in the world, and what they really want out of life, all while set against the backdrop of their family's wealth.
