Summary

"A Floating City and The Blockade Runners" by Jules Verne is a novel that pictures a remarkable journey across the Atlantic Ocean during the mid-1800s, specifically set aboard one of the most magnificent steamships of its time, the "Great Eastern". The story introduces readers to a diverse group of characters, from everyday passengers to skilled engineers and hardworking sailors; their lives intertwine as they make their way toward America. The novel starts with the main character arriving in Liverpool in 1867, ready to board the "Great Eastern,". The main character marvels the ship, calling it a floating city; amidst the chaos and excitement, and with the main character's friend Fabian, also on board, the novel hints at drama and changing relationships among those on the ship. The scene is set for emotional personal stories set against the backdrop of travel across the sea.
