Summary

"Dick Sand: A Captain at Fifteen" by Jules Verne is a tale that begins with the brig-schooner "Pilgrim," commanded by Captain Hull, where a young, orphaned novice named Dick Sand finds himself amid an escalating adventure. As the "Pilgrim" undertakes its mission, carrying passengers like Mrs. Weldon, her son Jack, and Cousin Benedict toward San Francisco, Dick's journey shifts gears when he spots a distant shipwreck from the mast. This discovery sets the stage for the trials ahead, pushing Dick to test his capabilities and courage. As decisions of rescue are weighed, the crew must evaluate their own complex dynamics, especially with Negoro, the cook whose actions add layers of complexity to their journey.

About the Author

Jules Gabriel Verne was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a series of bestselling adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1872). His novels, always well-researched according to the scientific knowledge then available, are generally set in the second half of the 19th century, taking into account the technological advances of the time.
